Phantasmal Flames, Destined Rivals & Prismatic Evolutions: English sets and their Japanese versions

Most Pokémon TCG sets come out in Japan first and reach English a few months later, often under a different name and sometimes as two Japanese sets rolled into one. Here are the English sets people search for most in Australia, what's in them, whether they have a booster box, and the Japanese set that holds the same cards.

Mega Evolution (the first Mega Evolution set)

Mega Evolution opened the Mega Evolution series in English on 26 September 2025, bringing back Mega Evolution as Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, with Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex on the boxes. It combines the Japanese twin sets Mega Brave (M1L) and Mega Symphonia (M1S), released on 1 August 2025.

• Mega Evolution booster box: yes, a standard English booster box of 36 packs. Japanese Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia boxes hold 30 packs of 5 cards.
• Mega Evo ETB: English Elite Trainer Boxes came in Mega Lucario and Mega Gardevoir versions.

Phantasmal Flames

Phantasmal Flames is the second English Mega Evolution set, released on 14 November 2025. Its headline card is Mega Charizard X ex — in Japan, Mega Lizardon X ex. It's the English version of the Japanese set Inferno X (M2), released on 26 September 2025.

• Phantasmal Flames booster box: yes, 36 English packs. The Japanese Inferno X booster box holds 30 packs of 5 cards and came out seven weeks earlier.

Destined Rivals

Destined Rivals (Scarlet & Violet) was released in English on 30 May 2025 and brought back Team Rocket's Pokémon, such as Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex, alongside other Trainer's Pokémon. It combines two Japanese sets: Glory of Team Rocket (SV10) and Heat Wave Arena (SV9a).

• Destined Rivals booster box: yes, 36 English packs. Japanese Glory of Team Rocket and Heat Wave Arena boxes each hold 30 packs of 5 cards.
• Destined Rivals ETB: standard and Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Boxes.
• Destined Rivals card list: Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex Special Illustration Rare is the most sought-after card in the set.

Journey Together

Journey Together (Scarlet & Violet) was released in English on 28 March 2025 and returned Trainer's Pokémon to the game, such as N's Zoroark ex and Lillie's Clefairy ex. Its Japanese version is Battle Partners (SV9), released in January 2025.

• Journey Together card list: the chase cards are the Trainer's Pokémon Special Illustration Rares. It came in booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes and booster bundles.

Prismatic Evolutions

Prismatic Evolutions (Scarlet & Violet special set) was released in English on 17 January 2025 and centres on Eevee and its evolutions as Terastal Pokémon ex. Its Japanese version is Terastal Festival ex (SV8a), released on 6 December 2024.

• Is there a Prismatic Evolutions booster box? Not in English: it's a special set, so its packs come in Elite Trainer Boxes, booster bundles, collections and tins. The Japanese Terastal Festival ex booster box holds 10 packs of 10 cards.
• Prismatic Evolutions ETB: the Prismatic ETB was one of the hardest products to find at Australian retailers when it launched.
• Prismatic Evolutions card list: Umbreon ex Special Illustration Rare is the chase card, followed by the other Eeveelution ex SIRs.

Black Bolt and White Flare

Black Bolt and White Flare are twin Scarlet & Violet special sets released in English on 18 July 2025, based on the Japanese sets of the same names. They feature Unova Pokémon, with Zekrom ex leading Black Bolt and Reshiram ex leading White Flare. As special sets, they came in Elite Trainer Boxes, booster bundles and collections rather than booster boxes.

Paldean Fates

Paldean Fates (released in English on 26 January 2024) is a special set full of shiny Pokémon, including a shiny Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare. Its Japanese version is Shiny Treasure ex (SV4a). There's no English Paldean Fates booster box; it came in Elite Trainer Boxes, booster bundles and collections.

Evolving Skies

Evolving Skies (Sword & Shield, released on 27 August 2021) is one of the most collected modern sets, known for its Eeveelution and Dragon alternate arts — above all the Umbreon VMAX alternate art, nicknamed "Moonbreon", and the Rayquaza VMAX alternate art. It's long out of print, so a sealed Evolving Skies booster box now sells for many times its original price. Its cards come from the Japanese sets Eevee Heroes (S6a), Skyscraping Perfection (S7D) and Blue Sky Stream (S7R).

Pokémon 151

Scarlet & Violet—151 (English, 22 September 2023) revisits the original 151 Pokémon. There's no English 151 booster box: the 151 booster bundle (6 packs), Elite Trainer Box and Ultra-Premium Collection were the main sealed products. The Japanese 151 set does come in booster boxes of 20 packs, and its chase card is the Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare.

Japanese or English: which should you buy?

• Japanese sets release first, often months before the English version.
• Japanese booster boxes cost less per box and are the usual way to open a set early or buy it in bulk for a shop.
• English cards are what's played in Australian tournaments and sold at Kmart, Big W, Target and EB Games.
